Nuthatch, study in coloured pencil on Strathmore Smooth paper, 3.5″x2.5″.

The second of the three study pieces for Christmas was this handsome little Nuthatch. Fantastically agile birds, they can climb vertical trees with ease, walk upside down and then walk down the tree head first – all in search of tasty tidbits to eat.

This one was a challenge to get together, due to the unusual pose and the very long limbs and feet. But after a few false starts, it did come together nicely, and there’s a lot of character in this small piece. The face in particular looks very inquisitive, like it’s spotted something that it wants to nab for it’s lunch. The colours of this one were also lovely to work on, the soft mixture of blues, greys and dark browns combining to create a nice little study.
