Purple Emperor, study on Strathmore smooth paper, 3.5″ x 2.5″

There a good many different and sometimes exotic looking butterflies in the UK, one of which being the magnificent Purple Emperor. I’m yet to see one for myself, but am hoping to remedy that in the future. For now though, a study will have to suffice.

This one was a very interesting one to work on, the purple in particular was a process of layering several different shades of blue and purple, with hints of sepia and light greys mixed in. The fine hairs on the body was really enjoyable to work on too, getting that texture in the small area was a really good challenge. I’m pleased with the overall effect, the variable purple colour and the thick texture of the hair combining to create an interesting and colour little study piece.
