Lion silhouette

“Lion silhouette”, Mars Lumograph pencils on Strathmore 300 paper, 297mm x 173mm.

This piece is what you might call a bit of a break from the normal efforts, as there’s no detail to speak of, everything is backlit and the colours are as simple as could be: very unlike my usual work then!

I wanted to try something a bit different and also see what would happen if I got the Mars Lumograph pencils out again as it has been a while since I’ve used them. I also wanted to see what would happen if I simplified a piece of work to a bare minimum but still make it very definite. A delicate balance certainly, but I think I got there. How this one comes out of the background is really pleasing and how it is just the essence of the subject leaves a lot to the imagination which works very well I think.

I might do some more like this, I do like the minimalist stripped back look to it. And yes, I’m aware that it would be quicker with white on black paper instead of building up the black onto white paper: but I find it gets a better quality finish, and that matters.
