A relatively rare species in the UK and one which doesn’t get anywhere near as much attention as it might perhaps warrant. The reason? Not “photogenic” enough, apparently. I disagree. I think this species of owl is a very handsome bird indeed, and one that certainly needs attention paid to it’s preservation. Although labelled green status by the RSPB, it’s numbers are still somewhere around the 1000 – 1500 mark. In many regards it competes, both territorially with other native species of owl, and for the limited resources for it’s preservation. In an ideal world we’d look after all our species equally, not just the “pretty” ones.
