A later than planned update on the kestrel, but hopefully worth it. I’ve put in the primary layer of detail over the tail feathers now, and even though I say so myself I’m really happy with their texture and gradation of tone: this will serve as an ideal platform to work from during the refining process. I’ve already started this on the four outer-most long wing feathers, as you can tell by the dark tone being much more solid and the texture better defined. Still need to tweak a few areas, but I’ll get to that during the finishing pass. Next task is to finish those wing feathers to the same level, and as they represent the largest area of dark tone in the drawing I’ll be able to judge the tone and texture better over the rest of it – a necessary stage, as at the moment the long feathers look rather “stuck on” compared to the rest of the bird.
